KHK Visiting Research Fellow 2010

KHK Visiting Research Fellow 2010, Associate Professor, Department of Religion, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, USA

In 2009 Christopher MacEvitt was appointed Associate Professor of Religion at Dartmouth College, after being Assistant Professor from 2003 to 2009, also in the Department of Religion. Before joining Dartmouth College Christopher MacEvitt had been a Fellow of the W.F. Albright Institute for Archaeological Research, Jerusalem, the Vatican Film Library at Saint Louis University, and a Junior Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington D.C. He was awarded several grants and prizes.

Christopher MacEvitt’s scholarship focuses on the ways in which diverse religious communities have come into conflict, co-operated and co-existed around the Mediterranean, with particular interests in gender and identity. During his time in Bochum he works on book project, “Martyrs, Muslims and Mystics in the Medieval World”, which examines how Franciscan narratives about martyrs and mystics were used in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries both to define the place of Islam and Muslim societies within the world, and to define the path of Christian spiritual achievement within Christian Europe.
