Arie L. Molendijk is Professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Groningen since 1999. In 2009 he got an additional teaching assignment in the Philosophy of Religion. Before his appointment in Groningen he has worked in research and teaching capacities at the universities of Leiden and Amsterdam. He was a Humboldt Fellow at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich (1992-93) and a resident scholar at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton (N.J.) in the spring of 2008.
Professor Molendijk specializes in the history of ideas, in particular of nineteenth- and twentieth-century theology, religious studies and philosophy. He is also an internationally acknowledged expert of Ernst Troeltsch and is currently engaged in research on public religion. Arie L. Molendijk’s KHK research project with the title “The Modern, the Anti-Modern and the Religious” deals with the discussions on religion, modernity and a modernized religion around 1900 in Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands.
